Fun Brain Exercise

May 19, 2020 By Geeta

Doing things differently is a great way to exercise the brain. In other words, it is good brain gym! Here are some fun and out of the box ways to keep our brain going:

Brush your teeth with the non dominant hand.

If you are used to a clean work desk or clean kitchen, then try working with a messy desk and a messy kitchen. Your are wiring and firing new areas of your brains by doing this.

Write Z to A. It is a good way to kick start some dormant areas of your brain.

Do puzzles like word search or Sudoku…

Repeat tongue twisters!

Practice writing with both your hands.
Attempt to learn a new language!

Blog 18/52: Time Management

May 19, 2020 By Geeta

Blog 18/52 – Beyond Being Overwhelmed : Time Management

The term ‘Time Management’ originated in the 19th century industrial revolution period. It refers to development of process and tools to make one more efficient, while increasing productivity and profit. Today is refers to the skill of the individual to manage his time to his advantage. To productively and efficiently balance the elusive time between person’s personal and professional life.

It is worth taking a pause to first relook at why you are constantly racing with time, and what is important to you and is your focus there. Take a weekend all to yourself, take a paper and pen and sit in a quiet corner, jotting down your points. Make a list of things that needs to be done in order of priority. Assign a time frame to your list. And spending 10 minutes every evening and the next morning going over the list, re-schedule if necessary. This habit will keep you more calm and better prepared for the day, because the message you unconsciously pass to your mind is … ‘I got this’.

Blog 19/52: Procrastination

May 11, 2020 By Geeta

You have an important presentation coming up tomorrow and you have to prepare for it today morning. You look at all the material and then put it away, thinking you will handle it after reading the emails first…then after the team meeting…then you get distracted by the funny WhatsApp message and soon it is evening and you are stressing out. You go home and you have to watching that addictive serial. Sounds familiar?

Why do people procrastinate? It has been researched that stress caused from work and not the pending work itself is the cause of procrastination. And you procrastinate to give your brain a relief from that stress.  Stress caused from fear. Fear of failure perhaps. What if my presentation is not good enough, what if the boss is not happy with it…  Handling the stress by focusing on time management or following easy brain hacks like 3-3-6 breathing, positive visualization helps handle stress and increases your self-esteem. Notice the procrastination dissolve away.

Chakras

May 5, 2020 By Geeta

Word of the week – Chakra: Ancient Indians always regarded the body as a temple, and rightly so. There are seven chakras in the body and they are energy centers. They are located around the crown, back of the head, throat, heart, solar-plexus, navel, perineum and their location coincides with different glands in our body. The word ‘Chakra’ is derived from Sanskrit, loosely translated as ‘Circle’. The Chakras are believed to be linked to our spiritual, emotions and physical well-being, specially when well-balanced with tools like yoga, breathing and meditation.

May 5, 2020 By Geeta

Blog 17/52: How can you achieve your goals?

If you know and identify your goals, you are already one step closer to success. Don’t be afraid to dream. Dream big. Visualize. Chart out your long-term goals. What would you do in 2020 to reach closer to them? Start narrowing it down to this month, this week. Prioritize these tasks in order of importance and the have-to-dos. And make your plan for the day based on this. Yes, this may sound overwhelming and a waste of time, especially since you are already stressed with so much to do. Yet these are the very steps of most successful people. As Oliver W Holmes said: “The great things in this world are not so much where we are, but in what direction we are moving”.

Seven Team Building Exercises to Try Out as You Work from Home

May 4, 2020 By Geeta

My article in the online portal of Thrive : https://thriveglobal.in/stories/seven-team-building-exercises-to-try-out-as-you-work-from-home/

Seven Team Building Exercises to Try Out as You Work from Home: Unusual situations call for unusual strategies, here are some suggestions to beat the lockdown blues and ace wfh challenges.

With almost the entire workforce into the Work from Home Mode, it has given us the opportunity  to look at new ways of effective work patterns. This has also necessitated the Human Resource team to look at Training and Developmental activities from a different perspective. Apart from functional training it is equally important to keep employees motivated, focussed and working in an integrated way. The below listed team building activities can be practise for this lock-in period. Each of these activities have an impact on the collective consciousness, keeping the professional, physical and emotional wellbeing  and development of our employees.

1. Online webinars, where the training sessions  are focused on self-development topics. This helps the employees to deliberate on functional and self-developmental topics keeping them oriented and absorbed. Joint sessions on self-development topics is an important stimulant to culture farming, embedding shared values and behavior patterns.

2. Case study discussion: Online case studies discussions help finetune skill sets and at the same time open up different joint perspectives to common issues impacting business strategy. Case studies can be for specific groups based on the business function and processes. This helps a lot in arriving at a joint strategy and approach going forward

3. Fitness challenges: Work from home totally disrupts the daily routine that has been followed for years. There is a paradigm shift in the physical routine bringing about reduced mobility. Physical fitness being a precursor to emotional and professional agility is an important aspect that can get ignored. WhatsApp groups of fitness enthusiasts wherein staff put in workout-from-home fitness videos. Encourage your team to use Fitness Apps and conduct fitness challenges where all staff members can put up targets and share the results. A sense of healthy competition is a good motivation factor resulting in a fit organisation.

4. Online snap polls and surveys: Snap polls and surveys on strategy, policies, customers. and more, help staff synergy towards shared vision and common organisational goals. The results are shared transparently and best suggestions, appreciated and acknowledged in the group. When these suggestions get implemented on the ground there is a sense of common shared accomplishment.

5. Book clubs and debates: E-discussions and debates on specific topics which are industry related, social, philosophical, spiritual encourage exchange of diverse views and flow of thoughts. Book club is a group of reading enthusiasts who discuss and deliberate on books read by them. They also give inputs for the digital library for posting interesting videos and books.

6. Cook-offs: Work from Home has brought out the unknown skills of people. There is plenty of time and room for carrying out cooking and culinary experiments. Exchanging notes/ photos on dishes prepared brings in common non-work specific grounds and breaking barriers among team members.

7. Music clubs: Exchange music notes, e-Antakshari… passions and art forms bring out the inner core of people. Music clubs where people e-post their own songs or some good numbers on WhatsApp groups or having e-sessions of music enthusiasts helps collective re-energising and de-stressing. Common hobbies and passions bring in a special bonding amongst people.
