Minimizing Negativity During WFH
Experiencing negativity during work from home phase? Here’s how to minimise it
Article appeared in the following online portal : Pinkvilla.com and Womenfitness.org
Since the announcement of lockdown, many of us are working from home but there are several challenges as well. Read on to know how to tackle negativity.
Workplace negativity is an increasing problem in today’s times and often results in loss of confidence, control and harmony among peers. This lockdown has changed lives, changed people, and transformed both personal and professional life to a great extent and this negativity can significantly impact morale and productivity.
To help curb this problem, here are seven ways by which you can minimize negativity in your workplace.
Praise and recognition
The power of a few kind words or praise is remarkable and can uplift anyone’s mood and motivate them to work harder and better. One can’t always tell how the other person is feeling, but a few kind words can make anyone happy and cheerful. Managers need to take notice of the excellent work done by the employees and reward them on those.
Open communication
More often than not, ineffective communication practices in the workplace are the root cause of frustration and negativity among the employees. Instead of blowing up at a coworker, take them aside and communicate why you’re stressed or upset and discuss how to prevent it from recurring. This will enable you to distress, calm down, and look at things with a fresher viewpoint.
Building a strong company culture
Every organization would have a set of core values. Both employers and employees must be aligned on these core values. This would lead to higher productivity as well as a higher motivation among employees. Senior management must be cognizant of these values and communicate the same consistency throughout the organization. Building a culture takes time but it offers substantial benefits.
Opportunities to express opinions
Factors like pay, job location, working hours, working conditions, overtime hours, dress code etc. are essential to every individual. Changes in these areas can result in serious questions, negative responses and concerns. To help minimize friction due to changing policies, a meeting with the manager at regular intervals can be held where everyone can voice opinions. Regular staff discussions help address any employee issues before they turn into significant problems.
Recreational facilities
According to the India Employee Survey, 22% of respondents felt that their productivity was low because of overwork and stress. HR can conduct games so that employees can enjoy and take breaks to feel rejuvenated. This will enhance and enrich employee bonding and spread positivity.
Offer more than just money
A study conducted by Princeton University in 2010 indicated that higher income increases happiness by only up to $ 75,000 per year. However, beyond that threshold, higher income doesn’t increase happiness. Various other factors come into play. At workplaces, employees value the following:
New challenges to tackle
Meaningful work which can make employees feel that they are making a difference
Visibility for consistent performers
Diversity among the workforce
Creative perks such as free gym memberships, option to work from home, flexi-hours etc
By ensuring that these factors are incorporated, an employer can improve employee morale as well as increase employee retention.
Personalizing workspace
If employees aren’t feeling happy at work, they can be encouraged to take measures for feeling better. They can spruce up their workstations with family pictures, table plants or merchandise of their favorite brands. Calming colours such as shades of blue or green can spread optimistic vibes. Employees could also be asked to keep their desks clutter-free as it alleviates stress.
Negative attitudes can have a long-lasting and adverse impact on employees and office productivity. Both as employees and employers, it is essential to take note of poor workplace attitude and work toward turning them around.
Don’t Judge Your Kids
Don’t judge your kids: A mom shares her parenting wisdom

I believe the one thing that positively impacts your children’s life is their level of confidence. They look up to you and expect your appreciation in whatever they do.
As mothers, we want to offer the best to our children in any given situation. This puts stress on us, wanting to be that perfect mom. We unknowingly stress our kids out as we want their future to be the best. We end up unwittingly judging them for not measuring up to our standards. However, we do learn and grow wiser with our children. As a wiser mother of two grown-up and married children, I can offer my experience for all the younger mothers out there.
I believe the one thing that positively impacts your children’s life is their level of confidence. They look up to you and expect your appreciation in whatever they do. It helps to keep your cool and be positive and patient in your approach when dealing with children. When your focus on their good behaviour outweighs your attention to the negative, you are indirectly helping them be more confident.
So what if your child did not score well in his/her math exam? Maybe he failed the test. Did you give him a hug first? Did you ask what happened and where did he/she go wrong? Did you praise your child for trying? Or did the fear of your child growing up to be a failure overtake you? Did you yell at him for failing? If you are angry and yell as a reaction, that is exactly what your child will learn. Judging him, calling him lazy for not putting in more effort and worse comparing his failure or bad behaviour to his ‘better’ sibling, works to the contrary.
On the other hand, pick up his good points, even if it seems small. Praise your child for every small thing to build his/her confidence. Test scores are just an outcome. By focusing only on a good score, you are not preparing the child to be successful for a bigger achievement. In fact, neither are you preparing him to face failures. There are bound to be ups and downs in life. But if you focus and applaud the child for the effort and not the outcome, this will be a good life lesson.
I am not suggesting that you overlook his pranks when it needs correction. Correct them with kind words, but it’s advisable to be tactful and clever about it. Maybe your child is not oriented towards math. Maybe you were not either. You will only dampen his confidence by yelling at him.
If you want a long-term sustainable positive effect on your children’s growth into a well-rounded adult, these small praises are the ones your children will remember. This behaviour will also nurture and contribute to their confidence and is a useful life tool. As children, they also learn to depend and look up to you, especially when they are in trouble. With your love and patience, you have earned their trust and helped build their confidence. This develops a healthy positive learning attitude in your child’s life, and it is one big factor to propel them into successful adults.

Geeta Ramakrishnan has rich experience in coaching on change management and assisting people professionally and personally. She wants to help bring to their lives a balance of success and happiness and help them discover their ‘AHA’ moment.
What is the best advice you have got from your mother?
She told me, ‘Dream big in life and follow through the dream with passion. Don’t sit happily with the small wins in-between, nor feel bad about the small impediments on the way. Just learn your lessons, good or bad, and look ahead. That it is how you will find your happiness and meaning in life’.
What is the fondest memory of your mom?
While I live far away from my mom, she and her mom live together. I always saw to it that my mom is comfortable and well looked after. I made the mandatory daily ‘Hello’ and ‘How are you’ calls, and life went by. But a few years back, I decided to spend quality time with her. For the first time in many, many years, I learned so much more about her, not just as a mom, but as a person. It was a different kind of emotional bonding, and a fond memory to treasure.
What do plan to do with your mom first when the lockdown is over?
Since she is living with her mother and without any house help right now, I keep motivating and cheering her up every day. Once the lockdown is over, my friend and I want to go on a ‘mother-daughter’ trip with both our moms.
Monday Blog 23/52 – Procrastination
Monday Blog 23/52 – Procrastination:
Each one of us procrastinates at work at some time or the other. This is especially true in more successful people, thinkers and high performers. Have you wondered why? Procrastinating work and sitting under it with that smug face does give you some joy, even if momentary. Like I have to finalize this presentation in one hour, but let me watch 10 minutes of my favorite show on Netflix first. Sounds familiar. This ‘feel good’ factor is your brain’s way of handling stress. The stress caused by the presentation that needs to be finalized ASAP perhaps. What if it will not be perfect, what if my boss does not like it, what if it will make me look like a fool amongst my colleagues. So many ‘what if’ questions causing the stress.
Sometimes waiting till the nth hour and then rushing to finish the work, gives you that high. It is almost like challenging yourself…Yes, I did it in the last one hour and it is my best. Maybe so, but at the cost of what? This ‘high’ can become your lifestyle. It keeps your stress level high too, possibly leading to lifestyle diseases ranging from irritable-bowl syndrome, allergy, PCOD, diabetes, wrong cholesterol levels and cardio-vascular diseases.
The next time you think of procrastinating, you have a new way to look at what is happening behind the scene.
