Seven Team Building Exercises to Try Out as You Work from Home

May 4, 2020 By Geeta

My article in the online portal of Thrive : https://thriveglobal.in/stories/seven-team-building-exercises-to-try-out-as-you-work-from-home/

Seven Team Building Exercises to Try Out as You Work from Home: Unusual situations call for unusual strategies, here are some suggestions to beat the lockdown blues and ace wfh challenges.

With almost the entire workforce into the Work from Home Mode, it has given us the opportunity  to look at new ways of effective work patterns. This has also necessitated the Human Resource team to look at Training and Developmental activities from a different perspective. Apart from functional training it is equally important to keep employees motivated, focussed and working in an integrated way. The below listed team building activities can be practise for this lock-in period. Each of these activities have an impact on the collective consciousness, keeping the professional, physical and emotional wellbeing  and development of our employees.

1. Online webinars, where the training sessions  are focused on self-development topics. This helps the employees to deliberate on functional and self-developmental topics keeping them oriented and absorbed. Joint sessions on self-development topics is an important stimulant to culture farming, embedding shared values and behavior patterns.

2. Case study discussion: Online case studies discussions help finetune skill sets and at the same time open up different joint perspectives to common issues impacting business strategy. Case studies can be for specific groups based on the business function and processes. This helps a lot in arriving at a joint strategy and approach going forward

3. Fitness challenges: Work from home totally disrupts the daily routine that has been followed for years. There is a paradigm shift in the physical routine bringing about reduced mobility. Physical fitness being a precursor to emotional and professional agility is an important aspect that can get ignored. WhatsApp groups of fitness enthusiasts wherein staff put in workout-from-home fitness videos. Encourage your team to use Fitness Apps and conduct fitness challenges where all staff members can put up targets and share the results. A sense of healthy competition is a good motivation factor resulting in a fit organisation.

4. Online snap polls and surveys: Snap polls and surveys on strategy, policies, customers. and more, help staff synergy towards shared vision and common organisational goals. The results are shared transparently and best suggestions, appreciated and acknowledged in the group. When these suggestions get implemented on the ground there is a sense of common shared accomplishment.

5. Book clubs and debates: E-discussions and debates on specific topics which are industry related, social, philosophical, spiritual encourage exchange of diverse views and flow of thoughts. Book club is a group of reading enthusiasts who discuss and deliberate on books read by them. They also give inputs for the digital library for posting interesting videos and books.

6. Cook-offs: Work from Home has brought out the unknown skills of people. There is plenty of time and room for carrying out cooking and culinary experiments. Exchanging notes/ photos on dishes prepared brings in common non-work specific grounds and breaking barriers among team members.

7. Music clubs: Exchange music notes, e-Antakshari… passions and art forms bring out the inner core of people. Music clubs where people e-post their own songs or some good numbers on WhatsApp groups or having e-sessions of music enthusiasts helps collective re-energising and de-stressing. Common hobbies and passions bring in a special bonding amongst people.

Blog 16/52: Are Lifestyle Diseases Preventable?

April 26, 2020 By Geeta

Blog 16/52

There is a general belief that if heart diseases or diabetes or obesity runs in the family, it is genetic, and you will get it to. While the tendency may be there, it is not entirely true in the sense you can proactively take steps to avoid such lifestyle diseases.

Epigenetics says you can upgrade your DNA with some simple lifestyle changes. You can change your internal system by changing your breathing for example. Or by changing your thinking pattern into being more positive. Being positive allows your brain to calm down instead of stressing out while dealing with challenges.

The environment around you may or may-not change. The quality of air may still be bad, the commute to work may still be ridden by traffic, there may still be uncertainty and chaos at work and there will be a bag full of domestic issues awaiting you to resolve it at home.

In-spite of all of these, try taking a pause and a deep slow breath. Stress is known to increase the acidic levels within your body causing lifestyle diseases ranging from bloating and digestive issues, to arthritis, diabetes, renal conditions and respiratory issues. Deep slow breathing makes your body alkaline, which is needed to maintain an optimum body pH level for good health.

Forgiveness is an important part of healing

April 15, 2020 By Geeta

Forgiveness is an important emotion. It allows us to heal from age old scars and lightens our burdens. Being human is natural and getting hurt is an unavoidableaspect of being human. But we always have the power to forgive those who hurt us, for our own mental peace.

Personally and professionally, it is always important to have a clear, uncomplicated state of mind to get ahead and fully enjoy the little moments. Forgiveness is the pathway that clears many long held traumas within us, paving the way for success and inner peace. It is a beautiful act of kindness we can do for ourselves and truly lightens our hearts.

Remember holding a grudge will only harm our own well being, no matter how justified our anger may be. In order to move forward, one must first acknowledge the past and give it the closure it deserves. Like the saying goes, “To err is human. To forgive divine.”

Blog 15/52: Taking a pause to reflect

April 15, 2020 By Geeta

Taking a pause to reflect is imperative to success.

Blog 15/52 April 13th : Are you overwhelmed with the work and chores around you?

We are all slaves of habit. This is not necessarily bad. A baby learns to walk by falling multiple times, and is still fully focused on walking. Soon he has mastered the art of walking and it goes into auto-mode. It has become a habit.

You develop many many habits as you grow older. Some useful and some not so useful. And habits being in auto-mode, becomes transparent to you.

In your quest to success, you start living by the day, dealing with hundreds of things to do daily. Get up in the morning, rush through your tea, run for work, eat as fast as you can, work some more, run back home, eat fast, some mindless negative news, sleep and repeat. Suddenly it is all overwhelming and you don’t know how to exit.

Did you take out some time to just relax, just breath, to give that pause? To re-look at the way you are handling life and what you really want to focus on? That break, that pause is a good way to cut you out of the routine, allowing you to change the way you do things that are no longer useful. Change for the better. Change to success.
